Little Richard: I Am Everything – Monday Cinema
The Trail & District Arts Council presents “LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING” for Monday Cinema on November 20 at 4 pm at The Royal Theatre.
“LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING” tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll, through the story of the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive performance footage the film brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world, with all its contradictions. In interviews with family, musicians, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars, the film reveals how Richard created the ultimate means of self-expression, while hiding much of his own identity. His music covered God, sex and rock n’ roll even as the world tried to put him in a box.
As director Lisa Cortés says, “Without Little Richard, would Lizzo exist? Would Lil Nas X? Would the Rolling Stones?…As Mick Jagger ruefully admits in the film, Little Richard did it first. First to wear mascara; first to strip his shirt off; first to play with gender norms.”
“Even if you’re not a fan of Little Richard going into this film, chances are you will be by the time it’s over.” – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
“A long-overdue creation corrective that gives an outwardly revolutionary cultural icon his trailblazing due at the same time it grapples with the conflicted soul that rarely knew a lasting inner peace.” – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
“Does an impressive job of reminding us how much generations of rock stars, from Tom Jones to Mick Jagger, Elton John and Prince, have owed to Little Richard, and how radical his presence was in a world not yet ready to pay for his talent.” – Mark Kermode, Observer (UK)
