Kootenay Savings Music in the Park: Heavyweights Brass Band & Sly Violet
Energetic, folk-rock meets New Orleans-inspired brass.
Opening up tonight’s sounds at 6:15 pm is Sly Violet. Sly Violet is an energetic, indie folk-rock-pop husband-and-wife duo based in Salmo. Featuring Violet Clarke (guitar, harmonica, keyboard, vocals) and Sly Boston (drums), their shows are lively and upbeat. Their modern folk music is driven by Violet’s guitar, woven with powerful vocals, and completed with Sly’s pocket drum beats.
After playing hundreds of shows across Canada over the past decade their unique musical style has been road-tested and enjoyed by audiences from coast to coast. From George Street in Newfoundland, to ski resorts throughout the Rocky Mountains, to festival stages in Ontario, Sly Violet is making waves in small towns and big cities across Canada with their engaging and entertaining live shows.
Sly Violet has independently released 3 studio albums: Feel Your Way Out (2009), King of the Mountain (2011), and Friends From Far Places (2015). Feel Your Way Out earned BEST FOLK at the Barrie New Music Awards and a nomination for BEST FOLK/ROOTS at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Violet won the Kawartha Lakes Idol competition in 2007 and went on to be a Top 100 finalist on the Canadian Idol TV show.
“This is some up beat folk ‘tunage’ best described as ‘modern folk.’ In Violet’s voice I hear the confidence of a seasoned performer such as Neco Case or Lily Frost.” — Colin Lock, Fernie Free Press
“Violet Clarke has the music inside… Her voice is as perfect for a hot summer day as it is for a cool fall night.” — Carolyn Nikodym, Fernie Fix Magazine, Fernie, BC
Headlining tonight, The Heavyweights Brass Band hits hard from 7-8 pm with its seasoned blend of groove, energy, virtuosity, and originality! For over a decade, this Toronto-based, New Orleans-inspired brass institution has brought people to their feet with an inspiring blend of original music and unexpected covers.
Their music has been featured on film, commercials, radio, and television and they have performed and recorded with the best in the game from percussion legend Giovanni Hidalgo to NOLA legends Roger Lewis of the Dirty Dozen Brass band and Joe Lastie of Preservation Hall fame. Their extensive touring experience has given them the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Trombone Shorty, The Roots, and The Soul Rebels, among many others.
In a genre typically represented by groups twice its size, this powerhouse quintet punches above its weight and always delivers the feel-good, let-loose energy that leaves audiences clamouring for one more song!
